ABSINTHE (WORMWOOD)
Absinthe and wormwood are related ideas in perfumery, but they are not identical smells. Wormwood has an assertive green, herbal character with dry woody facets. An absinthe-inspired accord may add the sweeter, liquorice-like impression of anise to suggest the drink.
Wormwood oil is obtained from Artemisia absinthium by distillation. Absinthe, the spirit, contains several botanicals, so its aroma cannot be attributed to wormwood alone. In perfume, this note can give sweetness a bitter-seeming contrast and add an aromatic edge to woods. The note name does not identify a particular extract or the perfume’s alcohol content.
