Birch in perfume can point towards a woody idea, and it is often associated with the smoky leather character of birch tar. That tar-like interpretation may suggest burnt wood and a sharper medicinal edge rather than the clean smell of newly cut timber.
The broad tree name is not, however, a specification for birch tar, a leaf extract or a particular botanical species. Birch-inspired accords can be composed in different ways, so the surrounding notes matter. A leather or smoke setting gives a clearer clue to a tar-like interpretation than the word birch alone.
