BLACK PEPPER
Black pepper brings the sharp, dry impression of cracked peppercorns, with woody warmth beneath its lively spice. It can also feel surprisingly fresh: aromatic and citrus-like touches give some extracts a brighter edge. In a perfume, that combination can sharpen a soft floral impression or give warm notes a more defined outline. The appeal is the contrast between freshness and heat, rather than sugary spice.
The botanical source is Piper nigrum, whose berries provide perfumery materials including distilled oils and absolutes. These extracts do not all smell identical, and the way a perfumer combines them matters as much as the note name. A black pepper listing is therefore a useful clue to a fragrance's spicy character, without guaranteeing a particular extract, intensity or position in its development.
