Butter in perfume evokes a rich, creamy impression. Perfumers can create this effect as an accord, a blend designed to suggest a particular smell. It is often described as lactonic: a term for milky or creamy facets rather than a statement that dairy is present. In a gourmand fragrance, which draws on edible aromas, butter can contribute fullness as well as a sense of melting softness.

A butter accord can balance sweeter notes with creamy richness. Beside syrup or a pastry accord, it may help suggest a dessert, but those other aromas belong to the wider composition. The note name alone does not identify a recipe, and buttery richness need not mean a fragrance smells strongly of sugar.
