CASTOREUM
Castoreum gives perfume a leathery, animalic direction: warmth with an untamed edge rather than a purely clean wood impression. Some natural extracts also have an inky, phenolic facet, meaning a sharper aromatic nuance within the leather character. A composition can soften these qualities or bring them forward; the note name does not set their intensity.
Natural castoreum originates in the castor sacs of beavers and can be processed into perfumery extracts, including absolutes. Reconstitutions also exist, built to evoke its warm leather character without animal-derived castoreum. Consequently, animalic describes an olfactory effect as well as a material family. A perfume listing this note does not by itself establish animal ingredients, a particular reconstruction or a fixed duration on skin.
