CEDARWOOD
Cedarwood in perfume describes a woody character that may recall pencil shavings, sawdust or warmer resinous wood. It can feel dry and clearly outlined, with a softer balsamic sweetness in some interpretations. This is a broad scent family rather than one identical aroma: Virginia cedarwood is associated with a dry pencil note, while Atlas cedarwood can emphasise warm, resinous wood.
The oils sold under the cedarwood name come from different trees. Virginia material uses Juniperus virginiana, a juniper, whereas Atlas material uses Cedrus atlantica, a cedar. Suppliers document steam distillation of their wood, but a perfume’s cedarwood note does not identify a particular oil or prove that it is present. When exploring this note, look for whether the composition highlights the crisp wood impression or surrounds it with softer, sweeter facets.
