CEDARWOOD (VIRGINIA)
Virginia cedarwood has a dry, recognisably woody smell often compared with a freshly sharpened pencil. Alongside that clean wood character, some oils have a smoother, gently sweet or balsamic side. It offers a way to explore wood without assuming the smoky, tarry effect suggested by some descriptions of cedar. The balance varies with the material and the perfume around it.
The natural oil comes from the wood of Juniperus virginiana, a juniper despite its cedarwood trade name. Robertet documents steam distillation of North American wood, while Berjé describes its Virginia supply from the southeastern United States. Virginia therefore identifies the established material rather than proving that every oil was made in that state. In a perfume, the note may give a dry woody frame; its name alone does not establish the ingredients or wearing time.
