CHOCOLATE
Chocolate is a gourmand perfume theme, meaning it evokes food, with possibilities ranging from dark cocoa to a creamy confectionery impression. A chocolate note can feel warm, powdery and slightly bitter rather than simply sugary. The balance matters: a drier cocoa character gives a different impression from the rounded sweetness of a chocolate cream.
Cocoa absolute is one material available to perfumers. Eden Botanicals describes its solvent-extracted material from Theobroma cacao seeds as rich and balsamic, recalling dark unsweetened chocolate with a faint spicy edge. A finished composition can interpret chocolate differently: Montale describes a creamy, cocoa-powder effect with bitter orange in Chocolate Greedy. Neither example defines every chocolate note. The label identifies the intended scent, not a guarantee of cocoa absolute, edible chocolate or a fixed amount of sweetness.
