CITRUS
Citrus describes a family of scents rather than one ingredient. Lemon, orange, bergamot, mandarin and grapefruit offer different expressions of fruit and peel: the sharp freshness of lemon, for example, differs from the rounded sweetness of orange. A citrus accord can emphasise one fruit or blend several into a broader impression of zest and brightness.
In perfume, this freshness can stand alongside herbs, flowers or woods, so a citrus note need not make the whole fragrance smell like fruit juice. Many natural citrus materials come from the peel, including cold-pressed oils; distilled and further processed materials also exist. The general label does not specify a recipe, extraction method or natural ingredient content. Look to the surrounding notes to understand whether a fragrance develops in a green, floral or woody direction.
