CIVET
Civet is an animalic note: musky, pungent and capable of a distinctly bodily, even faecal impression. In a carefully balanced perfume it can instead read as a warmer, softer presence beneath flowers or darker notes. Some recreations also reveal honey-like and floral facets. The contrast between the concentrated material and its effect within a composition is central to understanding this note.
The original perfumery material is a glandular secretion from civets. The scent can also be recreated with blends of fragrance ingredients, so a civet note does not prove that an animal-derived material is present. These blends should not be confused with civettone alone, a molecule used in civet reconstructions. The finished effect depends on the balance of the perfume, ranging from a discreet musky accent to an openly animalic character.
