CLARY SAGE
Clary sage has a sweet herbal character with a drier, slightly bitter side. Its essential oil can suggest tea, soft tobacco and leather as the scent develops, adding more texture than a simple leafy freshness. In perfume it can sit within aromatic compositions or contribute to musky accords, depending on the materials around it.
The plant is Salvia sclarea, distinct from common sage, Salvia officinalis. Essential oil is distilled from flowering and leafy parts, while clary sage absolute is obtained by solvent extraction. These are different perfumery materials: an absolute can emphasise richer tobacco and amber-like facets. The general note name does not identify which extract was used, or confirm a natural ingredient in a particular fragrance. Its herbal, dry and warmer nuances should be understood within the whole composition.
