CLOVES
Cloves give perfume a warm, sweet-spicy character with a pungent aromatic edge. The scent recalls the familiar dried spice, with sweetness held in check by its sharper side. It can register as a distinct spicy accent or contribute to a warmer blended accord; the note alone does not tell you how strong or sweet the finished perfume will be.
Culinary cloves are the dried, unopened flower buds of Syzygium aromaticum. Perfumery also uses oil from the leaves of this tree, so the broad label “cloves” should not be treated as a precise extract specification. Eugenol is an important contributor to the characteristic aroma, but an oil is a mixture rather than eugenol alone. A fragrance note describes an olfactory impression and does not establish whether natural clove oil is present.
