COCONUT

Coconut brings a creamy, milky impression to perfume, sometimes with a soft waxy edge or a fruity suggestion. Its rounded sweetness can make a floral composition feel fuller or give a gourmand fragrance a tropical direction. The effect can be a gentle layer of creaminess rather than an obvious coconut dessert; the amount and the surrounding materials make the difference.

Perfumers can build coconut effects with aromatic materials such as gamma-nonalactone, a lactone with a recognisable coconut-cream scent. Despite its traditional alternative name, Aldehyde C-18, this material is not an aldehyde. It is one possible building block, not a complete definition of every coconut accord. A listed coconut note therefore describes an olfactory effect and does not establish that coconut oil, flesh or a natural extract is present.
