Copaiba balsam, also known as copahu, can bring a mild woody scent with a little sweetness and a gently peppery, resinous edge. Its character need not be heavy or strongly vanilla-like. It can add a soft resinous layer to woods or accompany floral and spicy materials without turning the whole composition into a dense amber accord.

The balsam is an oleoresin, an oily resin collected by tapping Copaifera trees. Eden Botanicals supplies a Brazilian material identified as Copaifera langsdorffii. Copaiba essential oils also exist: these are distilled from resin and should not be confused with the collected balsam itself. Species, processing and grade can affect the profile. Copahu and copaiba are related names for this material family, not two inherently different fragrance notes. The label alone does not confirm a species, supplier or natural ingredient in a perfume.
