CYPRESS
Cypress in perfume combines fresh green wood with a resinous, balsamic character. Here, balsamic suggests a rounded resin-like sweetness beneath the sharper conifer impression. The familiar perfumery reference is Cupressus sempervirens, whose aromatic foliage and branches yield materials that need not smell like dry timber alone.
The extraction matters. Distilled cypress leaf oil can have a brisk, woody-green character, while Eden Botanicals describes its Cypress By-Absolute as deeper, with mossy, earthy and faint smoky facets. That particular extract is made from foliage and branches left after essential-oil distillation, followed by solvent extraction. It is not the same material as the distilled oil. A cypress note may draw on this fresh-to-resinous range, but its label alone does not identify the extract or make every fragrance equally smoky, sweet or woody.
