CYPRIOL (NAGARMOTHA)
Cypriol, also called nagarmotha, has a woody, earthy character with peppery spice and smoky, leather-like facets. Its darker rooty impression can resemble aspects of vetiver or patchouli without being either material. The source documented by fragrance suppliers is Cyperus scariosus, an aromatic sedge; it should not be confused with the cypress tree despite the similar name.
Steam distillation of the roots produces a perfumery oil. Suppliers also offer further-processed versions: Robertet’s Cypriol Coeur is a rectified oil, meaning it has undergone fractional distillation. The general note name does not specify such a grade. In woody or leather compositions, cypriol can contribute an earthy, smoky layer beneath other notes, while the blend determines how prominent it becomes. Neither the note’s presence nor a supplier’s material description guarantees the finished perfume’s duration.
