Elderflower takes its reference from the fragrant, cream-coloured blossoms of the elder, Sambucus nigra. As a perfume note, it can suggest a delicate floral texture, with a powdery softness that sits between a fresh bouquet and a sweeter, cordial-like idea. It refers to the flowers rather than the dark berries that develop later on the plant.

The balance is a matter of interpretation. Jo Malone London describes an elderflower fragrance through the contrast of powdery blossoms and tart gooseberry, showing how fresh fruit can sharpen a soft floral impression. That does not mean gooseberry, pear or any other fruit is an intrinsic component of every elderflower note. Nor does the label specify an essential oil or a fixed synthetic recipe.
