FENNEL

Fennel brings a sweet, anise-like character with a green herbal edge. The impression can feel fresh and aromatic while retaining a warmer spicy undertone. Rather than a sugary fruit effect, its sweetness belongs to the fragrant herb: the feathery foliage of Foeniculum vulgare has a recognisable sweet anise scent.

The plant’s aromatic fruits, commonly called seeds, also provide essential oil. Mane Kancor describes its steam-distilled fruit oil as sweet, green, earthy and spicy, with anethole and fenchone among its major components. That material is one reference for the note, not proof of the ingredients in every perfume. A fennel interpretation can emphasise leafy freshness or the warmer spice aspect; the general name alone does not specify which plant part or material the perfumer has used.
