BALSAM FIR
Balsam fir combines the impression of evergreen needles with a warm, sweet woody richness. Its absolute can have a rounded, almost jam-like fruity facet beneath the coniferous character. This gives it more than a sharp forest freshness: in a composition, it can bring softness and warmth to dry woods while retaining the suggestion of freshly cut greenery.
The botanical reference is Abies balsamea, a fir native to North America. Perfumery materials include a needle absolute; Biolandes sources needles in Canada for its material, while Eden Botanicals identifies its absolute as solvent-extracted. An absolute and a distilled essential oil are different preparations, so their scent profiles should not be treated as identical. A listed balsam-fir note can refer to this olfactory character without proving that a particular extract is in the perfume.
