FLORAL NOTES

Floral notes describe the flower-like part of a perfume, covering a much wider range than a single sweet petal scent. They may feel fresh and light, as in a lily-of-the-valley impression, or fuller and more enveloping, as in tuberose or gardenia themes. A perfume can focus on one recognizable flower or blend several into a bouquet whose individual petals are harder to separate.

The term is an olfactory description, not an ingredient list. Perfumers can work with flower extracts and with aroma molecules that recreate or reinterpret floral effects. An absolute, an essential oil and a composed floral accord are different kinds of material. When exploring a floral note, consider whether you prefer an airy flower impression or a denser bouquet, and how the rest of the fragrance shapes that character.
