GENTIAN

Gentian offers a bitter-toned perfume impression that need not feel harsh. Hermès describes its own gentian interpretation through both bitter and velvety facets, set beside the softness of musks and powdery iris. That pairing illustrates how a distinctive bitter accent can sit within a gentle fragrance; the iris and musk are surrounding notes, not intrinsic parts of gentian.

The name alone does not identify a particular gentian species, plant part or extraction method. Nor does it require every perfume to follow the same formula. When exploring the note, consider the contrast between its bitter character and the softness around it. Gentian can be a useful direction if you enjoy freshness interpreted without relying solely on a sweet floral impression.
