GRAPEFRUIT
Grapefruit in perfume combines fresh citrus sweetness with a recognisable bitter edge. It can suggest both the fruit and the aromatic spray of its peel, giving brightness a sharper outline than sweetness alone. That contrast is useful if you like citrus with some bite: the impression can feel crisp without becoming simply sugary. Its prominence and balance depend on the composition.
A natural source is the essential oil of Citrus paradisi, obtained by cold pressing the fruit’s rind. Givaudan describes its grapefruit oil as fresh, zesty and bitter, and notes its use alongside vetiver or floral notes. This illustrates how a citrus accent can interact with drier woods or flowers. A grapefruit note may draw on such an oil or a broader scent construction; its name alone does not confirm the ingredients in a particular perfume.
