GRASS

Grass in perfume recalls the green smell of a freshly cut lawn: vivid vegetation, a leafy edge and, in some interpretations, a trace of sweetness. Demeter describes its own grass fragrance through the freshness and sweetness of newly mown grass. This is a useful reference if you enjoy a garden-like green impression rather than treating freshness as necessarily citrus or clean laundry.

Perfumers can create that impression with scented materials such as cis-3-hexenol. DSM-Firmenich describes this molecule as green and leafy, recalling cut grass; its documented natural grade is produced through biotechnology. The example shows why a grass note need not mean a distilled lawn extract or an exclusively synthetic recipe. The finished accord may emphasize a sharper leafy effect or a softer green impression, depending on the materials around it.
