GREY AMBER
Grey amber is another name for ambergris, associated with a warm, musky scent that can have woody, marine and animalic facets. It is different from the sweet resin-and-vanilla accord usually called amber. Its character is complex rather than simply the smell of seawater.
The natural material forms in the digestive system of sperm whales. Chemical changes during ageing generate odorous compounds from ambrein, an initially odourless constituent. Manufactured fragrance materials, including ambroxide, can evoke aspects of that aroma. A perfume described as having an ambergris note may use a reconstruction; the note list alone does not establish the presence of natural ambergris or a particular production method.
