HELIOTROPE
Heliotrope in perfume brings together a floral impression, almond-like character and powdery softness. It can lean towards a sweet, almost confectionery effect, especially when vanilla or almond notes surround it. A more floral interpretation keeps that sweetness light and petal-like. Powdery describes the soft, dry texture of the scent, not the presence of cosmetic powder in the bottle.
The flower and the perfume idea are related, but neither should be reduced to the molecule heliotropin, also called piperonal. Research on living heliotrope flowers found an almond-like scent associated with benzaldehyde and anisaldehyde; the researchers did not detect heliotropin in the samples studied. A perfumer’s heliotrope accord is an interpretation of the floral theme, not a declaration of the flower’s complete chemistry. Its name also does not establish that a natural flower extract is present.
