HELIOTROPIN (PIPERONAL)

Heliotropin, also called piperonal, is an individual aroma compound with a sweet floral character. Supplier Parchem describes cherry and cherry-stone nuances, vanilla-like sweetness and a creamy aspect, with a lightly spicy shading. These overlapping facets can suggest a rounded, softly edible floral effect rather than one literal fruit or dessert. In a composition, the balance of surrounding materials determines which side is most apparent.

The name is closely associated with heliotrope, but the molecule is not the flower or an extract of it. Researchers investigating living heliotrope flowers did not detect piperonal in the samples studied; the almond-like scent was associated with other compounds. Heliotropin can be a perfumery ingredient in its own right, while a heliotrope accord is a broader scent idea. Neither label, on its own, establishes the full formula, production route or lasting power of the finished perfume.
