Hydrocarboresine is a cistus-derived perfumery material with a smoky, resinous character reminiscent of burning incense. Its appeal lies in that combination: the warmth of resin with a smoke impression already woven into the scent. Suppliers also compare it with burning wood. These are olfactory associations, not a requirement to burn the material when using a perfume.

Biolandes produces Hydrocarboresine from Cistus ladaniferus using its own processing method. The manufacturer identifies leaves and twigs as the plant material and describes further processing of the crude extract in France. It is therefore a processed botanical material, not a single synthetic molecule designed to imitate benzoin or labdanum. In a composition it can help build an incense or smoke theme; the amount and other ingredients determine whether the result feels subtly smoky or more prominently resinous. Its name does not guarantee the strength or duration of a finished fragrance.
