IRIS (FLORENTINE/TUSCANY)

Florentine or Tuscan iris belongs to the powdery floral world of orris, with violet-like facets and a woody undertone. The softness can be substantial rather than faint: IFF describes its Italian Iris pallida material as rich and powerful. In perfume, that combination offers a different impression from a purely fresh flower, bringing both floral character and a dry, softly textured setting.

The Florentine designation is closely associated with Iris pallida and its long cultivation for perfumery in Tuscany. The natural aromatic material comes from rhizomes, the plant’s thick underground stems. Distillation yields orris butter, while further processing can produce other grades. Florentine is also used for Iris pallida grown elsewhere, so the wording alone cannot certify Tuscan harvest or a particular extract. The complete composition determines how powdery, woody or floral the perfume feels.
