IRIS (MOROCCO)

Moroccan iris is an origin-qualified orris note associated with powdery flowers and violet-like facets. Its character need not be uniformly warm or sweet: supplier descriptions include soft floral butter and a woodier, green-toned infusion. In a fragrance, these different emphases can bring a dry floral texture or a softer impression, depending on the material selected and the notes around it.

Morocco supplies more than one kind of perfumery iris material. Payan Bertrand lists Moroccan Iris germanica butter and absolute, while Santis lists Iris pallida butter from Morocco. Natural orris comes from rhizomes, the thick underground stems; distillation produces the material called butter. The country label alone does not specify the species, extraction grade or recipe, nor does it establish the ingredient content of every perfume carrying the note.
