IRIS PALLIDA (DALMATIAN IRIS)

Iris pallida, also known as Dalmatian iris, is a botanical source of the powdery orris character used in perfume. Its rhizome extracts can combine violet-like florality with wood, fresh roots and earthy nuances. Their softness is not necessarily faint: some refined materials are notably rich, while other grades reveal cleaner, soapy or leathery facets. The name identifies a plant rather than one unchanging scent profile.

Although the plant bears fragrant flowers, the established natural perfumery materials discussed here come from its rhizomes, the thick underground stems. Distillation produces orris butter, and different processing methods produce different grades. Traditional maturation can take years, but accelerated methods also exist.
