IRIS PALLIDA (FRANCE)

French Iris pallida is a source of orris notes that can move between powdery violet, fresh roots, woods and a clean, almost soapy texture. France describes the material’s origin, not a different species or one fixed smell. For example, a French Landes extract described by Biolandes emphasises floral violet and fresh roots, while Landema’s 15% irone butter includes woody, soapy and leathery facets. These are different material profiles within the same botanical source.

French production includes Iris pallida cultivated in the Landes region for its rhizomes, the thick underground stems. Distillation gives orris butter. Some producers use accelerated post-harvest processing instead of conventional years-long maturation, so French iris should not automatically be described as hand-worked or aged for a fixed period. The grade and composition determine which facets become noticeable in perfume; a note listing alone does not establish ingredient provenance.
