IRIS ROOT/ORRIS
Orris root is the perfumery name for the aromatic iris rhizome: a thick underground stem rather than a true root. Its extracts can smell powdery and floral, with violet-like facets, woods and an earthy or fresh-root impression. This combination gives orris a textured character that can be soft without simply smelling sweet. Some materials also reveal cleaner, soapy or leathery sides.
Iris pallida and Iris germanica are documented sources. The harvested rhizomes are processed into different materials: distillation gives orris butter, while suppliers also offer resinoids and more refined extracts. These names identify different forms, not one interchangeable product. Traditional maturation allows the aroma to develop, but modern accelerated processes mean that years of storage are not universal. The extract and perfume formula determine which facets stand out; an orris note alone does not specify the ingredient used.
