ISOBUTYL QUINOLINE

Isobutyl quinoline, often shortened to IBQ, is associated with a forceful leather character in perfume. Materials sold under this wording can also reveal earth, roots, woods, moss-like nuances and tobacco. IFF describes a leathery, earthy material with rooty and nutty facets; Givaudan’s Isobutyl Quinoline-2 emphasises powerful leather and woods. These profiles show why the note can feel more textured than a simple soft-leather impression.

It is a synthetic perfumery material, rather than an extract of leather. Similar commercial names cover different chemical forms, so the broad note label does not identify an exact isomer or supplier grade. In a composition, the amount used and the surrounding ingredients determine how prominent its leather or earthy aspects become. Those scent comparisons do not establish the presence of oakmoss, tobacco, nuts or animal hide.
