JATAMANSI / SPIKENARD

Jatamansi, also known as spikenard, has a dense earthy and herbal aroma, with an impression of damp ground beneath warm resinous and woody-green facets. A slightly bitter edge can sit beside softer sweetness and mild spice. This gives the note a more rooted, herbal character than a simple smooth wood impression.

The natural essential oil is steam-distilled from the roots and rhizomes of Nardostachys jatamansi, a plant of the Himalayan region. The aromatic material comes from these underground parts rather than its flowers. In perfume, spikenard can bring an earthy counterweight to a rich floral accord or extend the darker, herbal side of woods and resins. The finished composition determines how clearly this earthy warmth emerges and how long it remains noticeable.
