CAMPHOR LAUREL

Camphor laurel points to the camphor tree, Cinnamomum camphora. As a camphor-themed perfume note, it suggests a sharp, cool-smelling aromatic accent that may recall eucalyptus or menthol. White camphor oil is one material expressing this character: it comes from wood distillation followed by separation into fractions. Its bracing impression can give a composition an apothecary-like edge.

The tree’s name does not guarantee an oil rich in camphor. Different forms and preparations produce different aromas: ravintsara leaf oil has a fresh eucalyptus-like profile, while linalool-rich ho wood oil is more floral and woody. These materials should not be treated as interchangeable merely because they share a botanical species. In a finished fragrance, the note describes an aromatic direction; the precise material and the surrounding blend determine its character.
