LAVENDER FLOWERS (GRASSE)

Lavender flowers associated with Grasse suggest a fresh floral scent threaded with aromatic herbs. The lavender character can include gentle sweetness, a little dry powderiness and a sharper camphoraceous accent. In a perfume, the floral and herbal sides may be balanced quite differently: the name does not guarantee an unusually soft or delicate version of lavender.

Grasse connects this note with the perfume-making landscape of southern France. YSL’s account of lavender describes cultivation in the surrounding hills as the town’s perfume industry developed. This association should not be confused with a separate botanical species or a universal extraction grade. True lavender, Lavandula angustifolia, provides flower and flowering-top oils used in perfumery. The specific producer, growing site and preparation would be needed to establish an individual material’s provenance; the regional note alone supplies only part of that story.
