LEATHER

Leather in perfume describes an impression rather than one single smell. It may suggest the soft surface of suede or a darker, earthier material with woody and animalic associations. The contrast matters: a leather note can feel supple alongside flowers, or more rugged when its dry, earthy facets are emphasised. Hermès, for example, describes a suede-like leather inspiration paired with rose in Galop d’Hermès.

Perfumers construct these impressions with different fragrance materials and combinations, called accords. IFF’s Iso Butyl Quinoline is one example of a molecule with leathery, earthy and woody facets; it is not the recipe for every leather perfume. A leather note does not establish that animal hide is an ingredient, nor does it certify the entire formula as vegan. Look at the surrounding floral, woody or aromatic notes to understand the style of leather being suggested.
