LIATRIS

Liatris in perfumery is associated with the smell of hay, tobacco and coumarin: a softly sweet, dry impression rather than a lush floral bouquet. That contrast can give a fragrance the warmth of dried grasses while keeping its sweetness away from a sugary dessert effect. The balance of hay and tobacco will depend on the material and the surrounding composition.

A natural example is Robertet’s Liatrix absolute, made from American leaves identified by the supplier as Liatris odoratissima, using solvent extraction followed by alcohol purification. The leaf source matters: the garden name blazing star also refers to plants such as Liatris spicata, and does not establish that a perfume contains an extract of purple flowers. A listed liatris note describes an intended scent; it does not confirm which extract or reconstruction the perfumer used.
