LILY
Lily can give a perfume a flower-and-leaf impression: fresh greenery around soft petals, with a rounded centre that keeps the floral effect from feeling thin. The balance can be delicate or fuller, depending on the interpretation. Cartier describes its approach to lily through the freshness of the leaf, the petal and the softness of the pistil, showing how a whole flower can become a composed scent portrait.
Botanically, true lilies belong to Lilium; the two names do not identify separate fragrance families. The genus includes many species and varieties, and their flowers are not all equally scented. A perfume’s lily note therefore does not establish a particular variety or a natural extract. Look at the surrounding notes to understand whether the floral portrait is likely to emphasise fresh greenery or a softer, more enveloping texture.
