LILY OF THE VALLEY
Lily of the valley, also called muguet in perfumery, combines fresh floral sweetness with a green, leafy impression. It can suggest a newly picked sprig, flower and foliage together, rather than the smell of petals alone. A composition may make that greenery crisp and prominent or surround it with softer flowers. The resulting freshness can be delicate without necessarily making the perfume faint.
The plant is Convallaria majalis, with small fragrant white bells; it is distinct from the true lilies of the genus Lilium. Perfumers generally recreate its scent as an accord instead of relying on a conventional flower essential oil. An accord is a combination of materials designed to convey one recognisable effect. The word muguet identifies that floral idea, not a single molecule or a universal recipe shared by every fragrance.
