MATÉ (PARAGUAY)

Paraguayan maté points to the South American plant Ilex paraguariensis with a Paraguay origin designation. In perfume, maté materials can suggest green tea leaves, warm herbs, dry hay and tobacco, sometimes with floral or smoky shades. The country name does not by itself establish a different scent from every other maté origin.

Paraguayan producer Wilhelm lists maté absolute, oil and resin as separate products, showing why these names should not be treated as one preparation. In the wider ingredient trade, leaf absolutes are made by solvent extraction and purification with alcohol, as documented by IFF for its own grade. That method should not be assumed for every Paraguayan product. The selected material and surrounding notes determine whether a fragrance feels greener, softer or more dry and tobacco-like.
