MINT
Mint brings a cool, green herbal impression to perfume, but the name covers more than one scent. Peppermint can feel sharply mentholated, with an almost icy edge. Spearmint tends towards a sweeter, rounder mint character, familiar from mint chewing gum. A mint note may therefore suggest crushed leaves, brisk freshness or a softer aromatic sweetness, depending on the material and the composition.
Peppermint, Mentha × piperita, is a hybrid of water mint and spearmint. Its essential oil can be steam-distilled from flowering tops; spearmint leaf oils are also used in fragrance. Natural oils are possible sources of the note, but a note listing does not identify a perfume’s formula. The surrounding ingredients determine whether the mint feels leafy and aromatic or closer to a sweet mint accord.
