MOCK ORANGE

Mock orange suggests fragrant white flowers with a character between orange blossom and fresh jasmine. It can give a bouquet a bright, freshly flowering impression without being a citrus-peel note. The name refers here to Philadelphus, a flowering shrub, rather than to the blossoms of an orange tree.

Many garden forms carry strongly scented white flowers; the delicacy of a perfume interpretation should not be mistaken for a rule that the living plant smells faint. Perfumers can recreate the floral impression as an accord, combining fragrant materials to evoke the bloom. Alongside other flowers or green notes, its freshness can become more apparent. A mock-orange note does not by itself identify a natural flower extract or a specific cultivar in the formula.
