MUSCENONE

Muscenone is a synthetic musk with a powdery, cosmetic softness and a slight animalic undertone. Its character recalls the rounded musk of scented face powder, with a trace of bodily warmth underneath. This makes it more textured than a purely fresh or soapy description would suggest.

Firmenich describes two useful roles for the material: at low levels it can enhance a fragrance, while a larger presence makes its own musky character more apparent. A soft effect therefore does not mean that the material itself is weak. Muscenone is a specific fragrance material, distinct from muscone. How powdery or animalic it feels depends on its balance with the other notes, rather than a fixed position in every perfume.
