MUSK
Musk describes a broad range of scent effects, from the soft impression of freshly washed fabric to powdery cosmetics and warm, bodily nuances. Some musks feel clean and airy; others have a fuller animalic character or touches of fruit and wood. The word therefore gives a direction rather than one exact smell.
Modern fragrance materials offer many ways to create these effects. Synthetic musks include distinct molecules with different profiles, while ambrette seeds provide a plant-derived source of musky facets. Historically, musk also referred to an animal secretion; a modern note listing does not establish that source. In a composition, musks can soften contrasts, give volume or become the main theme. Their balance with the surrounding notes matters more than a universal rule about strength or lasting power.
