MYRRH
Myrrh brings warm, balsamic richness with woody and earthy facets. Balsamic here means a rounded resinous impression, sometimes touched by vanilla-like sweetness. Depending on the extract, there may also be a liquorice-like accent or a darker nuance recalling mushrooms and damp earth. These details give the resin more character than a simple sweet amber description.
The fragrant material comes from the gum exuded by Commiphora trees, including Commiphora myrrha. Distillation produces essential oil; solvent extraction followed by purification can produce an absolute. The resulting materials need not smell identical. Myrrh can deepen resinous or woody compositions, while its earthy side provides a counterpoint to sweetness. A note listing alone does not specify the extract used or guarantee a smoky effect.
