MYRTLE
Myrtle has a fresh, herbaceous scent with a cool camphor-like edge and gentle sweetness. Think of aromatic greenery rather than a large bouquet of flowers: the crispness of crushed leaves is central to the impression. It can bring a clear herbal accent to perfume, balancing sweeter notes without necessarily making the whole composition sharp.
The botanical source is Myrtus communis. Fragrance suppliers produce essential oil by steam-distilling leafy branches or leaves and twigs. That source helps explain why the note is aromatic even though the plant also flowers. The exact balance of sweetness, greenery and camphor varies with the material and the composition. A myrtle note does not by itself specify a particular oil or its country of origin.
