OAKMOSS

Oakmoss has an earthy, wooded smell that brings together dry bark and the dampness of fallen leaves. A pine-like edge can sit above a fuller, softer impression of forest floor. Its interest lies in that contrast: dry and moist, woody and mossy, rather than simply the smell of fresh green leaves.

The perfumery material comes from Evernia prunastri, a lichen that grows on trees, often oaks. It is not oakwood, despite the shared name. Oakmoss absolute is obtained by solvent extraction and alcohol processing of the lichen. In a composition, this character can give flowers or citrus an earthy backdrop. A listed oakmoss note describes the intended smell; it does not identify the exact extract or construction used in every fragrance.
