POWDERY NOTES

Powdery notes describe a scent impression with a soft, dry, finely textured quality, sometimes recalling fragranced face powder. They are an effect, not one botanical ingredient or a statement that powder has been added to the perfume. Depending on the surrounding accord, powderiness can feel floral and sweet, woody and restrained, or softly musky.

Different perfume structures can create this impression. Kenzo calls Flower by Kenzo a powdery floral, with rose, vanilla and white musk. Chanel describes a powdery trail in 1957 alongside iris, neroli and a cedar-musk accord. These examples show why powdery does not automatically mean one flower, a single material or a vintage style. For a useful comparison, consider what accompanies the texture: vanilla may emphasize sweetness, while woods can give it a drier outline. Powderiness alone tells you little about a fragrance’s strength or how long it will last.
