ROSE WATER

Rose water suggests a fresh, softly floral rose impression. Depending on the material or interpretation, a little sweetness may accompany it without becoming syrupy. As a perfume theme, it can offer a useful point of comparison for someone drawn to a clear rose character rather than a heavily sweetened floral effect.

Distilled rose water is a hydrosol: aromatic water collected during the distillation of rose flowers. It is different from essential oil and from solvent-extracted absolute, and its water-soluble aromatic profile need not match either. Rose water can also be the intended product of distillation, rather than merely a leftover from oil production. A perfume’s rose-water note may describe an effect without confirming the hydrosol as an ingredient. Its softness does not determine the strength or duration of the finished fragrance.
